Frequently Asked Questions 1. What is online telephone counselling and what are the advantages?Online counselling is communicating via the telephone or the internet using an online teleconferencing service. Online counselling has many benefits. You are in the privacy and comfort of your own home or office which makes it more relaxing for you and you don't have the additional stress and expense of travelling. Studies have shown the client satisfaction is the same as in face-to-face counselling. 2. What are the limitations of online counselling? Online counselling isn't for everyone. There are certain issues that can't adequately be supported, such as, suicidal intent, immediate thoughts of harm to yourself or others, and active psychosis. For these issues, please immediately access your local area resources. 3. Do you offer counselling by email, telephone or in person? Telephone counselling is another option if you don't have computer access. Email is used for limited communication to enhance counselling or mentoring but is not available as the primary source of contact. Counselling in person is available in the Kansai region of Japan or in Northern New South Wales, Australia, depending on the time of year. Go to contact page for further information. 4. What's the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist? The professional titles of Counsellor and Psychologist are often interchanged, yet they can fulfill quite distinct roles. Counsellors focus on normal people with everyday problems and do not conduct psychometric testing. Counsellors use a practical approach with the focus being on improving and encouraging positive change in the clients life situation. Psychologists work with clients with a mental illness and can utilise a number of psychometric tests. The focus of most psychological work is on more specific problems or symptoms that aim on changing the client's personality. Both Counsellors and Psychologists engage in one-to-one, family or group work and can't prescribe medication. 5. What's the difference between counselling, mentoring and coaching? Coaching is mainly about improving on or developing specific skills that are job-focused and career-oriented and can be very expensive. Mentoring is the oldest form of learning and it's tried and true. This particular mentoring program looks at all areas of your life; career, family, health, and much more. Counselling is the best option when there is a specific issue that needs attention. |
